The Los Angeles area has a well-known industry base of commerce in sectors such as entertainment, aerospace, financial services, manufacturing, transportation, and a number of others. However, over the past 10+ years the region has embraced and expanded the technology domain and associated companies that operate in that realm.

Industry sectors that have attracted significant amounts of funding and achieved subsequent growth

Quarter 1 of 2022 saw slightly more than $7 billion distributed to area companies while Q2 numbers came in at a bit less than $5 billion – a number that certainly was not unexpected given the general slowdown seen across the country. The third quarter jumped upwards a bit with about $7 billion being dispersed to 320 organizations. Average deal size was about $15 million which put the area well in line with other top technology centers.

– During the 1st half of 2023 Los Angeles area companies gathered about $2 billion in venture capital funding. This was well down from the $12 billion that flowed into regional coffers during the same period in 2022.

Southern California as a whole is still ranked 3rd in the country for overall venture capital investment through the 1st half of the current year edging out Boston and tripling that seen in the Seattle area. This continues the Los Angeles area’s solidification as a primary technology hub, and it appears that it will undoubtedly progress in the same positive manner during the upcoming years given the talent pool in place, a diverse set of verticals that employ these individuals (particularly entertainment content and media), and the steady shift of attention and direct residency by many to this location.

– Update: Total numbers for 2022 ended up at about $23 billion that was distributed to approximately 1300 companies in the greater LA region thus activity and amounts generated remained high and kept the area firmly implanted in the top venture capital locations in the country.

Most importantly, the LA area certainly does know how to promote and garner an audience. The combination of all of the above definitely makes for a potentially formidable approach to expansion. National organizations maintain highly active branches here, while local groups are also exceptionally productive in activities specific to the area.

Higher-educational institutions play a large part in the success of the Los Angeles tech growth
UCLA, USC, Caltech, and others in the area are very well plugged into the startup environment, and the number of graduates who enter the high-technology field and stay to work in LA exceeds 10K per year.
