Minneapolis-St. Paul and the state it calls home has a long and storied history in the technology field. From Univac to Contral Data and Honeywell, the ecosystem of this area was at the forefront of computer science from the beginning.

Target, Best Buy, 3M, and a host of others populate a strong per capita ratio of enterprises on this list and make various contributions to the region’s expanding technology sphere.

Target, for example, has incubator and accelerator programs in place while the others provide a host of resources ranging from capital to credibility.

Compensation and cost of living
Minneapolis-St. Paul still has a relatively low price attached to residing in the area when compared to other locations with a strong technology sector in place. General compensation also vies favorably, with percentages that are well above those in other comparable locales. Indeed, current indicator numbers have risen to the top tier of a number of compiled lists that examine relevant pay areas. Various tax credits and grants have also been put in place for entrepreneurs who start and grow a business in Minnesota.

With the start of 2022 the amount of venture capital raised in the state of Minnesota surpassed the $1 billion mark for the third consecutive year, and the number of deals and investment entities that participated also showed a marked increase. First half numbers for 2022 came in a bit over $900 million for the state thus the slowdown experienced across many sectors hasn’t been quite as pronounced in this region. The primary recipients continue to be early-stage companies.

University of Minnesota and its contribution
A primary supporter of many of the events and growth in the region, the University of Minnesota maintains a venture center, a startup pipeline, and an incubator program along with Launch Minnesota. All of these expand on a Launchpad entity to provide grants, advice, and a scalable ramp up frame to numerous entrepreneurs in the state. St. Olaf College, University of St. Thomas, and other area institutions also offer initiatives and resources for emerging and expanding companies.
