The Northwest has been setting record numbers for amounts of capital raised, particularly over the past few years. $1 billion+ valuations have jumped substantially to a current number over 15, and emerging companies continue to emerge and flourish at exceptional rates.

In 2021 the Seattle area garnered a bit over $9 billion in funds that were distributed to almost 500 companies. These investments accounted for almost 2.5% of all capital invested in the country, and the final tallies represent increases of well over 125% for the former number and almost 200% for the latter. Q1 2022 numbers show a slight regression with $1.5 billion taken in by 100+ companies. Total amounts taken in for the first half of the year were a bit less than $4 billion which continued this trend based on the prior annum. Indeed, quarter three for 2022 saw local companies amass about $1.6 billion in funding that was spread over almost 100 deals. Certainly not the level seen in the prior year nor quarter. Nonetheless, Seattle and the surrounding market still will undoubtedly see sound, continued traction on the deal front.

– Update: Total funding amounts for 2022 ended up around $8 billion that was distributed to slightly fewer than 500 companies. Nuclear energy venture TerraPower garnered a sizeable chunk of that with an $830 million strike while battery materials manufacturer Group14 brought in over $600 million. Contract management player Icertis also scored a nice round of $150 million to reach a total raised amount thus far of over $500 million.

– Startups in the region accumulated about $700 million spread amongst around 100 deals during the 2nd quarter of 2023. This was well short of the mark set during the same period of 2022 which came in at $2.4 billion. Healthtech and cleantech were the primary beneficiaries.
